About the artist

Painting as
a form of listening.

Rupa Mandal is an independent artist in India whose abstract paintings move between observed landscape and interior memory.

Her practice begins with colour: the particular blue held by monsoon light, the mineral warmth of an old wall, the red that remains after a flower leaves the eye. Working slowly in acrylic, pigment, graphite and collage, she builds and erases until a surface develops its own weather.

Rupa's current bodies of work explore thresholds, sediment and afterimages. The studio is also the centre of a growing artist-led edition practice, bringing selected works into prints and objects without losing their material character.
